Top Cities with Bed Bug Infestations

Unfortunately, the bed bug infestations number continues to grow on a daily basis. Almost ten years ago, bed bugs were unheard of; today, we have a record breaking number for people effected by bed bugs in the United States. According to the National Pest Management Association, about 99.6% of all pest control professionals have treated bed bugs at some point.

Los Angeles, home to almost four million people, ranks in at number six this year on Orkin’s annual Top 50 Cities for bed bug infestations. The Bay Area, not too far behind at spot number ten. The most important factor is to become educated in bed bugs, how to spot them, and safety measures on how to prevent them as best as possible.

A bed bugs only key to survival is blood, allowing their lifespan to live up to 6-12 months. They feed about every 10 days but can survive many months without a blood meal. They often latch onto luggage of travelers, causing a widespread increase to anywhere and everywhere. Since bed bugs are not linked with poor hygiene, they are more difficult to prevent.

Be sure to occasionally inspect for bed bugs in your own home as well as hotel beds when you travel. They can be up to the size of an apple seed, visible to the naked eye. They will leave behind small, dark spots near the mattress edges or baseboards. They also shed their skin and may leave behind their shells.

Not everyone is allergic to bed bugs, so waiting until someone has a physical reaction is not plausible. In addition, there is no way to tell if a skin irritation is from bed bugs just by looking at the marks. There must be other visible signs to correctly identify bed bugs as the cause.

When travelling, keep luggage elevated and away from the edges of the room. Inspect your clothing and suitcase for bed bugs before packing up. Dry your clothes on high heat upon return. Bed bug infestations continue to grow year after year, but together through education we can help keep those numbers down as much as possible.
